As in previous games, Amateur sleuths have hints built into their task list, at least for some puzzles. To access a hint, click on the ? to the right of the task, then click on "I need a hint" to get a general nudge in the right direction. If you need another hint, wait 30 seconds or so for the next one to become available. The last hint will just tell you the answer you need.
If you don't want to use those hints or there isn't a hint for the puzzle you're stuck on, it's often helpful to read through Nancy's journal to get her thoughts on things. Calling Ned or Nancy's dad can also help some, but they don't have any hints to give except "Be careful!" which isn't too helpful really.
Master sleuths have a truncated task list and no hints available. I guess you'll just have to come see me, huh?
