You don't have to break this puzzle to solve it in a slightly different way.

What do I need to do?

Remember that cubes aren't the only thing that can activate buttons.

Your body can, too.
Use the cube from the starting room on one of the buttons, then stand on the other one.

When the door to the next room opens, shoot a portal inside to gain access - just don't stand on the lower button for too long, or the energy pellet might hit you.
