Breaking the puzzle1 hint left
Immediately after entering the turret room, you can break the puzzle - and make it a lot easier to solve at the same time!

How do I do that?

On the left side of the room, you'll see a standing button on a small pillar. Pressing it opens the door to a nearby tower with an activation hole inside it.

The door doesn't stay open for long, but if you jump onto the backside of the pillar and then jump again to get inside the tower, the door will be forced open. Permanently. This makes it much easier to solve the energy pellet puzzle, as your timing doesn't matter.

The jump can be a bit tricky, but I found it easier when jumping and crouching with portals in this position:
